  • This player has great technical performance however ,for me, it processes and downloads blue ray discs too slowly. It’s a good adjunct to the Sony Bravia t. v. it’s just that i’m impatiant. My fault, not thr players!

  • Purchased this product several weeks ago. I’ve had nothing but problems. My copy of Pirates of the Caribbean would not play back correctly (fresh out of the shrinkwrap mind you, not a speck of dust or scratch, a completely virgin disc). The player woud freeze up at random during playback. I found out later it would freeze up and become unresponsive to remote input or front panel controls after being on for more than a few hours. Definately has heat issues. Cannot get anywhere with Sony’s support department. I’m dumping my meager Blu-Ray collection on eBay and going with a more robust high-def format.

  • I recently purchased my S301 for $270 brand new without reading the reviews first. As soon as I click pay, I thought to myself crap, I should have researched this a little further. Oh well, it was cheap. After reading good/mostly bad reviews from Amazon and other websites, I was disappointed and wished I didn’t buy it. But I’m glad I did.

I’ve had the S301 for two weeks now and, besides the slow load time (about 60-90 seconds), everything works perfectly. It hasn’t skipped/froze on me and read all the Blu-ray/DVD movies just fine. The picture is amazing and the sound is great. I have a 46″ 1080p Vizio and Panasonic Home Theatre – it’s not a Sony or a Bose but hey it works :) . I’ll give it a few more weeks and see. I’m scared, I hope none of that bad stuff people say will happen to my player! Oh well, at least it wasn’t super expensive.

  • Great pic quality, same as the rival player. Great upscaling, this one is slower in boot time though.
No firmware upgrade needed right away.
No pauses or any performance issues here.

  • hello i am writing this review because of all the negative reviews this profile 1. 0 player has gotten which i think is a bad rap! First let me say i own 3 of these units and a bdp s500 which is also a great player from sony. I have owned my original unit for 2 years without any real problems at all! First off to all the readers that may not know keep your firmware up to date but the most important thing about this unit is when you do update each firmware you must do a full system reboot! After firmware is complete turn the unit back on without a disc in until it completely powers on. Then push down and hold the stop button with one hand and then push the power button and hold both until unit shuts down. After you have finished this power on the unit again and reset all your settings to what you need since by doing this all your old settings go away so you must re-enter them that is the only pain with this unit! I do this every time i do a firmware update and have never had a problem with any of them skipping, freezing powering down etc! Also purchase a maxell blu ray disc lens cleaner wich has small holes in the disc and creates a wind blowing action to clear away any dust on your lazer lens! Do not use brush lazer lens cleaning discs in a blu ray player because it may ruin the lens! You can buy one here on amazon and it never wears out since you are not using any brushes to clean it! I hope this review has helped! Enjoy!
